You know how sometimes a sequel is called a ‘spiritual sequel’? Indian 2 can be called a deeply dispiriting sequel, I think; it’s a film that shows almost no understanding of the soul and strength of the first film and its protagonist. For these reasons, it’s really hard not to join the chorus of citizens in this film as they fling objects at the protagonist and yell, “Go back Indian!”

Someone should have saved us, the viewers, instead. Indian 2 is nothing but a three hour time suck, where I was bored out of my wits. The end credits tell us that there’s going to be a third part. Help

Shankar, who’s known for his risk-taking endeavours chooses to stay in his comfort zone with this verbose script. His idea to evoke nostalgia is truly sweet but that’s not enough to turn water into wine. For those who want to relive the memories of the 1996 film, you can go watch the sequel. As for the rest, you can give it a miss unless you like moral sermons, flashiness, the beauty of hollowness, and things that are a little too extra and have a tolerance level of more than zero. And that reminds us, yet another thing you will also miss irrespective of whether you watch the film or not is the absence of AR Rahman’s melodies.

Indian 2 does not cohere together as seamlessly as one hopes and works more like an overwritten prelude to the events of the next installment and that is unfortunately all it does.

Kamal Haasan fans will obviously go berserk over this film. But if you are one of those for whom entertainment means a classic Indian movie with action, drama and emotions, you will enjoy it too as a one-time watch with a sequel (said to have been shot simultaneously) to come.

Yes, as Shankar told me during the interview, Senapathy is back again in his Indian 2. But now I want to tell him that the audience will not accept the second edition of any film if it is not much more brilliant than the first instalment. Now, let us wait for the third edition of the movie to know awaits us next. That's right. Shankar and Kamal Haasan will be back with Indian 3!
